HISTORICAL NOTES

These wagons are based on the Railway Clearing House regulations of 1907. Charles Roberts as a major wagon builder must have had a considerable influence in the drawing up of these regulations.  This is evidenced by the fact that the wagon’s being built by Roberts in the 1900’s, on which this kit is based, were virtually indistinguishable from the 1907 design. This wagon was built with side and end door.

Vauxhall colliery was one of a number of collieries in and around Ruabon, which is about 25 miles south from Wrexham.  The pit was started in the 1850’s and was known as the Kenyon Colliery. Its name was changed to Vauxhall in the 1860’s when a new shaft was sunk. In the year 1896 it was known to employ over 420 men, 361 of these underground. After a warning of closure in 1925 the pit finally closed in 1928.

Our 7mm ('O' Gauge) kit is based on one of 25 wagons ordered from Charles Roberts in January 1908. The running numbers for these wagons were 293 – 317. As was typical of the wagons of this period they were fitted with a brake on one side only. This group of wagons were fitted with Attock’s number 46 axleboxes.

These wagons were painted in G.W.R. china red, for the body, with black ironwork, the letters being white with black shading.
