HISTORICAL NOTES
These
wagons are based on the Railway Clearing House regulations of 1907.
Charles Roberts as a major wagon builder must have had a considerable
influence in the drawing up of these regulations.
This is evidenced by the fact that the wagon’s being built by
Roberts in the 1900’s, on which this kit is based, were virtually
indistinguishable from the 1907 design. This wagon was built with side
and end door.
Round
Green Colliery was registered in 1907 with a capital of £10,000 in £10
shares. The qualification for shares was £500 but at the time there
was no public issue. It employed 250 men in total, but only 30 of
these worked above ground. The colliery was situated at Worsborough
near Barnsley.
It
is not know how many wagons this colliery had but at least 70 were
purchased from Charles Roberts and Gittus.
Our
7mm ('O' Gauge) wagon is based on an order placed in 1909 for 30
wagons from Charles Roberts and which were delivered to Worsborough
Bridge.
The
running numbers for these are given as 121 – 150. The numbers 151
– 170 which were originally thought to be from Charles Roberts were
in fact from Gittus, these being almost identical to the Charles
Roberts version.
They
were painted red oxide with black ironwork and lettered white with
black shading.
