HISTORICAL NOTES

These wagons are based on the Railway Clearing House regulations of 1907. Charles Roberts as a major wagon builder must have had a considerable influence in the drawing up of these regulations.  This is evidenced by the fact that the wagon’s being built by Roberts in the 1900’s, on which this kit is based, were virtually indistinguishable from the 1907 design. This wagon was built with side and end door.

Manvers Main Collieries Ltd owned three pits, Mavers Old, Manvers New and Bambourgh, together they produced 1.5 million tons of high grade coal. Though based in Rotherham their wagons could be seen across the country, some even going as far as Penzance.

In order to keep up fuel supplies their need for wagons was great, between 1898 and 1907 Manvers Main Collieries Ltd leased over 1,200 wagons from Charles Roberts.

Our 7mm ('O' Gauge) wagon is typical of several batches that were purchased between 1900 and 1907, in total 463 wagons were built all of which were fitted with Ellis Axleboxes.

The group of wagons built prior to 1907 were numbered 1 – 250, whilst those ordered in 1907 were numbered 251 – 304 and 1706 – 1864.

On the 4th of March 1945 Manvers main had its only disaster. Due to a damaged trailing cable an explosion was ignited killing 5 people. The collieries continued to produce coal after nationalisation, until the last closed in the late 1980's.

Livery was London red body with black ironwork with white lettering shaded black.
