HISTORICAL NOTES

These wagons are based on the Railway Clearing House regulations of 1907. Charles Roberts as a major wagon builder must have had a considerable influence in the drawing up of these regulations.  This is evidenced by the fact that the wagon’s being built by Roberts in the 1900’s, on which this kit is based, were virtually indistinguishable from the 1907 design. This wagon was built with side and end door.

Unlike many of the landowners of the time, who settled for the easier coal rent from their lands, the Lister Kayes built their own colliery at Denby Grange near Wakefield.

We do not know when Sir john Lister Kaye Collieries began but there are references to the mine at Denby Grange as early as 1840 when it appeared in a report on children in the mines. The mine was a long-lived one for it not until  1991 that the mine finally closed with the loss of 500 jobs.

Our 7mm ('O' Gauge) wagon represents a batch  ordered by Denby Grange Collieries in 1910. A group of 20 wagons were built in October of that year with the running numbers 465 – 484. As was standard for this wagon it was fitted with a brake on one side only.

The bodywork was a CWS blue with black ironwork, its lettering was white with black shading.
