HISTORICAL NOTES

In 1887 the Railway Clearing House (RCH) issued its first set of specifications, which although not mandatory, did set down certain dimensional and other requirements in the construction of private owner wagons.

It is a wagon built to these specifications that our model of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company 6 plank open wagon, side and end door, represents.

The majority of private owner liveries were bases on one of four body colours; black, red oxide, grey or dark brown. The body colour was taken down on to the solebar, but all running gear and iron work on the body was painted black. There were obvious exceptions to the above and some quite colourful wagons did exist.

United National Collieries Ltd ordered this 10 Ton wagon in 1892, at present we do not know how many wagons were ordered and the only number we know is 1301. The wagon was painted brown with white letters shaded black.

United National Collieries Ltd ordered this 10 Ton wagon in 1892 for their pit at Risca, in the Rhonda valley. In 1912 they amalgamated with Standard Colliery. The combined collieries had a work force of 1500 men. This pit was well known as a accident black spot and between 1846 and 1926 over 200 men and boys lost their lives. Our 7mm ('O' Gauge) kit is based on the prototype which was numbered 1301.

Pictures taken of the colliery show a long line of 15 wagons but the detail is to poor to obtain running numbers from them. The collieries were taken over in 1926 when they became part of ocean coal, finally closing in the 1960’s.

The wagon was painted brown with white letters shaded black.
