HISTORICAL NOTES

In 1887 the Railway Clearing House (RCH) issued its first set of specifications, which although not mandatory, did set down certain dimensional and other requirements in the construction of private owner wagons.

It is a wagon built to these specifications that our 7mm ('O' Gauge) model of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company 6 plank open wagon, side and end door, represents.

These North’s Navigation wagons were painted red with white letters shaded black.

In 1890 an order was placed for 200 wagons the first of these being produced in 1891. When completed the running numbers were184 – 383.

Founded in 1889 the North’s Navigation collieries Ltd owned three large collieries in the Maestig district. The three collieries were linked by their own private railway system.

The three collieries were Caerau, Ceognant and Cwmdu collieries, thought the last was better known as St John’s, Colliery.

North’s Navigation Collieries Ltd were nationalised in 1947.
