HISTORICAL NOTES
In 1887 the Railway Clearing House (RCH) issued its first set of specifications, which although not mandatory, did set down certain dimensional and other requirements in the construction of private owner wagons. It is a wagon built to these specifications that our 'O' Gauge model of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company 6 plank open wagon, side door, represents. In 1898 Morris and Holloway were a prosperous Hereford coal merchants, as can be seen by their purchase in September of that year of at least 5 wagons. The known running numbers for these wagons are 4,5,6,7 and 8 all of which can be seen on page 122 of “PRIVATE OWNER WAGONS FROM THE GLOUCESTER RAILWAY CARRIAGE AND WAGON COMPANY LTD” by keith Montague.Unfortunately our 7mm kit is based on the prototype Number 8. The others having had the second line altered to read Coal, Coke, Lime & Salt Merchants. These 6 plank wagons were painted grey with white lettering shaded black. |
