HISTORICAL NOTES
In 1887 the Railway Clearing House (RCH) issued its first set of specifications, which although not mandatory, did set down certain dimensional and other requirements in the construction of private owner wagons. It is a wagon built to these specifications that our 'O' Gauge model of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company 6 plank open wagon, side door, represents.Arthur Day was a coal and coke merchant who operated in the Swindon area. All of his wagons state that they are to be returned to Exhall Colliery. Exhall colliery was located at Bedworth, which is near Coventry. It is known that the colliery employed 475 workers in 1896, two thirds of them working underground. Our 7mm wagon is No 1, a coal wagon that was built in 1908, though how many wagons were ordered is not known. As was standard for this period this wagon was fitted with a brake on one side only. The livery for
this wagon was black body, black ironwork, with white lettering.
