HISTORICAL NOTES

In 1887 the Railway Clearing House (RCH) issued its first set of specifications, which although not mandatory, did set down certain dimensional and other requirements in the construction of private owner wagons.

It is a wagon built to these specifications that our 'O' Gauge model of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company 6 plank open wagon, side door, represents.

There is a little confusion with the wagon numbering of Burtt, Bee-Hive manufacturer, their first wagon was produced in 1893 and was numbered 5 but in 1900 number 4 was ordered. In 1899 numbers 6 was ordered and finally in 1903 number 7. Numbers 4 and 5 are typical of the Gloucester 6 plank wagons of the period. Number 6 is a 5 plank, whilst number 7 is a 7 plank.

Just to add confusion there is a colour change in the livery of these wagons. Before 1900 the wagons were black with white letters, after 1900 the lettering was changed to yellow.

Our 7mm private owner wagon is typical of the later colour version, yellow, which may be used on numbers 4 & 5.
