| PLASTIKARD is a polystyrene material of a grade specially selected for model making. There are many varieties of polystyrene sheet, some are equally suited but the vast majority are not. On the whole it is the best to stay with PLASTIKARD, the branded product, selected for the model maker. |
Setting Out |
| Before anything can be made, the various components have to be set out. This is best done by cutting one edge of the sheet to a true straight line and using a datum from which the components can be drawn out directly on to a sheet using a fairly hard pencil and a set square. Set out all of the parts of the same thickness on the sheet, remembering to reduce the size of some to allow for overlap at the corners. Having set out the components, now is the best time to drill any holes or cut windows before the cutting out begins. |
Cutting Plastikard |
| PLASTIKARD, except in very thin sheets, cannot usually be cut through in one stroke. It can be sawn with a piercing saw but this is time consuming. The technique is to make a series of strokes with very sharp knife then snap the sheet much in the same way to cutting glass. |
Cutting an Aperture |
| Cut around the outline as above then cut free hand through the centre to the corners. The four triangles formed can then be snapped out. |
Assembly & Use of Mek-Pak |
| Match up to components dry together and hold in place, then using a MEK-PAK brush, allow a small amount of MEK-PAK to flow along the joint so that the capillary action will cause it to flow between the surfaces. Hold components together for a few moments until the set. Do not attempt to wipe any excess MEK-PAK, as this will mark the plastic. The MEK-PAK will evaporate in a short while. |
